Two source documents transcribed for quick reference: the Arcane Journal — Warriors of Chaos and the Arcane Journal — The March of Chaos. Pick an army list or a supplementary section below — each keeps its own source scans.
The Origins of Chaos. Long ago, the godlike Old Ones opened vast portals to reshape the world for the young races they created. Something else crept through those gates alongside them: the Ruinous Powers, predatory consciousnesses born of the raw energy and emotion of the aether. When the Old Ones' gates finally collapsed, the Old Ones were torn from the world and the raw chaos of the aether was unleashed upon it, heralding a tumultuous age that has lasted a thousand years. Ever since, the Ruinous Powers have warred upon reality from within the Realm of Chaos, whispering promises of power into the minds of mortals to corrupt them into their service.
The Chaos Wastes. At the top of the world, beneath the great shattered portal between this world and the next, raw chaos seeps from the aether into reality, twisting the land, sky and everything upon it. Here the Champions of Chaos raise impossible fortresses of twisted rock and bone, warring endlessly against one another for the favour of the gods.
The Shadowlands. South of the Wastes lies a bleak borderland where the presence of Chaos looms eternally, warpstone dust hangs on the wind, and the land itself trembles when the gods stir. Here the great Marauder tribes of the north endure — hardy, savage and ancient peoples who value neither civilisation nor its comforts.
The Northern Tribes. The Norscans and the nomadic Kurgan are warrior peoples to whom mutation is no curse but a blessing, an unmistakable sign of the gods' favour. War is their natural state. When Chaos is ascendant, the innumerable tribes set aside their rivalries and gather beneath the banner of a single mighty Champion of Chaos, marching south to bring war to the Old World.
